This story from the Telegraph, I think, is telling in its simplicity. Having just returned from a visit to Silicon Valley, I was sick of people lauding and heralding the invincibility of the housing market. This article does a nice job of noting how that is not sufficient cause to assume systemic rise in the standard of living.
Also, why did it take the UK exactly two years to own up to this?
